Hawke's Ridge 2010 Viognier
Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate vineyard is established on an ancient river terrace in Mangatahi, Hawke's Bay, with dry stony free draining soil. It is close to the central mountain chain that protects the Bay from most of the prevailing western weather. It also has hills to North, South and to some extent the East as well. This has the effect of sheltering the vineyard from the influence of the sea. Typically the summers are hot and dry, with cooler night time temperatures compared to other wine growing areas of Hawke's Bay. This extends the ripening period of the grapes allowing them to develop more concentrated flavours.
Region: Hawke's Bay
Varietal Mix: 100% Viognier
A Stylish oak-matured Viognier. The oak is married into the fruit and the net effect is excellent with a mix of savoury, toasty characters restraining the normally pungent fruit flavours of Viognier to produce a complex and elegant result.
Until recently Viognier was one of the least planted grape varieties in the world. When grown carefully the variety produces wines of full body and tantalising flavours and aromas. The variety is low yielding and capricious in nature. The Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate Viognier captures all the subtlety and mystery of this little known variety due to careful control of yield and vigour.
This was selectively handpicked and processed and underwent full barrel fermentation in seasoned oak with selected yeasts to enhance varietal expression. It spent 9 months in seasoned oak before bottling. It has aromas of ripe apricots and peaches with a hint of citrus and oak. Flavours are ripe stonefruit with elegant fruit sweetness and crisp acidity. It is medium to full bodied with a lengthy finish.
Food Match: Spicy Asian food, lighter curries, poultry or anything that would normally compliment a medium to full bodied Chardonnay.
