Hawke's Ridge 2009 Semillon
Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate vineyard is established on an ancient river terrace in Mangatahi, Hawke's Bay, with dry stony free draining soil. It is close to the central mountain chain that protects the Bay from most of the prevailing western weather. It also has hills to North, South and to some extent the East as well. This has the effect of sheltering the vineyard from the influence of the sea. Typically the summers are hot and dry, with cooler night time temperatures compared to other wine growing areas of Hawke's Bay. This extends the ripening period of the grapes allowing them to develop more concentrated flavours.
Region: Hawke's Bay
Varietal Mix: 100% Semillon
This Semillon shows aromas of rich, ripe grapefruit underlain by classical Semillon aromas of freshly cut grass and a hint of lime. The palate offers crisp acidity with rounded grapefruit flavours, mineral notes, and a hint of oak. It has good weight and complexity on the palate leading to long and satisfying finish.
Semillon is one of the classic white grape varieties of Bordeaux.
When lightly cropped the variety can produce wines of great character and ageing potential. Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate Semillon is cropped at very low levels to make wines of character and depth. The wines will be attractive to drink young but will also develop more complex flavours with cellaring for up to 5 years.
Food Match: Cheese, seafood and white meats.
