Hawke's Ridge 2009 Pinot Gris
Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate vineyard is established on an ancient river terrace in Mangatahi, Hawke's Bay, with dry stony free draining soil. It is close to the central mountain chain that protects the Bay from most of the prevailing western weather. It also has hills to North, South and to some extent the East as well. This has the effect of sheltering the vineyard from the influence of the sea. Typically the summers are hot and dry, with cooler night time temperatures compared to other wine growing areas of Hawke's Bay. This extends the ripening period of the grapes allowing them to develop more concentrated flavours.
Region: Hawke's Bay
Varietal Mix: 100% Pinot Gris
Look for pears, citrus, manuka honey and apricot aromas and flavours, with a
slightly spicy background that makes this classic example of Pinot Gris an ideal
match with seasoned food, or just enjoy the wine on its own. Drinking well now, but will continue to benefit by cellaring.
Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate Pinot Gris is made more in the style of Alsace Pinot Gris and offers a rich full-bodied wine with elegance and complexity.
This wine was hand-picked and processed. It was then fermented entirely in seasoned Oak barrels and matured for 6 months before bottling. It has aromas of dried pear and stone fruit with hints of citrus peel. It has a full well rounded palate with pear and peach flavours and rich mealy undertones with a hint of spice at the finish. It has crisp acidity and a well-balanced full body with a satisfyingly lingering finish.
Food Match: Seafood, chicken, pasta or pacific style cuisine.
Reviews and Medals: Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards 2010 - Bronze medal.
