Hawke's Ridge 2009 Tempranillo
Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate vineyard is established on an ancient river terrace in Mangatahi, Hawke's Bay, with dry stony free draining soil. It is close to the central mountain chain that protects the Bay from most of the prevailing western weather. It also has hills to North, South and to some extent the East as well. This has the effect of sheltering the vineyard from the influence of the sea. Typically the summers are hot and dry, with cooler night time temperatures compared to other wine growing areas of Hawke's Bay. This extends the ripening period of the grapes allowing them to develop more concentrated flavours.
Region: Hawke's Bay
Varietal Mix: 100% Tempranillo
This is a lovely garnet coloured wine with aromas of black cherry, spice and leather with subtle and well-integrated oak. The palate is of rich dark fruit and spice with excellent balance and a long finish.
Tempranillo is a traditional red wine variety of Rioja in Spain. The variety makes wines of fine balance and great ageing potential. Some Grand Reserva Rioja wines are kept in barrels for up to 24 months and then in bottles for up to 12 months before being released.
Gently handpicked and processed in small batches. It was then hand plunged during ferment then barrel aged in new and seasoned French and American oak for 9 months before bottling. This wine is best decanted and will benefit from careful cellaring. Hawkes Ridge is one of only a handful of wineries in New Zealand producing this Spanish gem.
Food Match: Meats and game, particularly Venison and Beef.
